1. Tell us about your background before ZapLuk. Share with us briefly about your entrepreneurial journey and inception of ZapLuk.
Having graduated from BITS in 2006, I worked in India for 5 years and then pursued my MBA from Fuqua School of Business ai??i?? Duke University to graduate in 2013. After graduation, I started working with Citi Bank in New York in their rotation leadership program. In 2015,during the thanksgiving dinner, Mahesh and I decided to go back to India and start something on our own. The idea for ZapLuk hit me during an EPL game when my wife requested me to take her out for her regular beauty routine. Adamant on not leaving the house until the match was over, I started wondering what if someone could come down to the house and offer their beauty services right at home.I scoured the internet looking for a service of the sort but to no avail. Then I, along with my friends, decided to build one on our own. Enter ZapLuk: our very own solution to our own everyday problems.
2. What is ZapLuk all about? Tell us in detail about the services offered?
Zapluk is an on-demand mobile app to conveniently discover and book appointments for beauty and wellness services at your chosen time & location – be it your home, office or hotel. We use our technology to bring top of the line beauty and wellness services offered by highly-vetted professionals directly to your doorstep. With Zaplukai??i??s standardized beauty services at home, customers can avoid traffic, pollution woes and get respite from the long waiting time in spas and salons.
3. What are the growth opportunities in this area?
The beauty industry in India is one of the biggest and fastest growing markets. On average a woman spends anywhere between Rs 2000 and Rs 4500 on a monthly basis on basic beauty rituals. KPMG estimates, in a large economy like India, the market size for on-demand beauty services pegs around $4.8 billion and itai??i??s growing at a CAGR of 20% yearly.
The TAM for providing Beauty and Wellness services at home is around 48% of $4.8 billion. Almost 90% of the spa/salon services can be provided at home and we estimate that 25-30% of the business is from home services. Home services are growing rapidly and are expected to make up for 50% of the market by 2020. Therefore the market size for at-home services in beauty and wellness is currently estimated to be INR 45billion.
On demand space is coming up now! And we entered the market with a great vertical of Beauty, Wellness and Fitness. Beauty and wellness have got an overwhelming response and we are working on the finer aspects of fitness. Once we launch fitness and it falls in place, we would like to focus more on offering exquisite services and niche products to our customers.
4. What is your competition in the market? What is it that sets you apart from your competition?
There are few competitors in this space ai??i?? Stayglad, Belita, Vanity in the Beauty vertical
These points summarize what separates us from our competitors:

5. What is the business model of ZapLuk? Can you briefly summarize the growth achieved in both volume and value from the day1 till now?
The customers are charged on every service which is availed by them. We have two business models for revenue generation:
Full employee model: ZAPLUK gets 100% of the transaction value
Freelance model: ZAPLUK gets 20% of the transaction value. 80% is retained by the freelance professional.
Our business is going great and the acceptance is overwhelming. We have had a steep growth in the number of services delivered and also in the customers acquired. We plan to continue this trend through deeper penetration in the existing service areas and also by expanding to new territories. We provided 1300 services in the last month. During 6 months of our operation, we were able to provide services to customers ranging from everyday women to big celebrities and solve salon woes for pregnant women and young working moms.We look forward to exciting times ahead.
6. How has your beginnerai??i??s journey been? What were the challenges you faced in setting up and scaling up your enterprise? Any hurdles that you faced or are still facing?
Initial setup is a major concern for all startups. Initially, we were apprehensive about launching an app based on providing service but it turned out well for us. The major challenge we had to overcome was the sudden overcrowding in the On-demand market space. But quality always stands out. We continued to provide customer friendly service and it worked in our favor. The major hurdle that we see in the market is raising funds. The market is choppy and the coming months will decide which startups will survive and go to the next level and which ones will fade out.

We started operations in an untapped market of Hyderabad. We are currently providing services in selected areas of Hyderabad and hope to cater to the entire city very soon. We have also acquired Pamperazi, a home salon service from Chennai under our wing. We plan to expand to other cities like Bangalore, NCR, Mumbai in the near future to make Zapluk a household name for beauty service solutions.

We do have hiring initiatives in BITS-Pilani our alma mater and a few of the IITs, NITs etc
12. Any experience or advice you would like to share with soon to be start-up founders out there?
Focus your efforts on the execution and having a good team around you. Donai??i??t dwell too much on refining the idea. Launch an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) and then learn from the market and your customers about features which work and which donai??i??t. Before you launch, ensure that unit economics work well for the industry of your choice because the company has to have a stable finance and make money at some point ai??i?? earlier the better.
We wish the Zapluk team the very best for their future endeavours and hope that they can continue making such headways.
