Here are excerpts from an interview with Rajiv Sodhi, Vice President & Managing Director, GoDaddy India & Australia.
1. Tell us about founderai??i??s background beforeAi??GoDaddy. Share with us briefly about the entrepreneurial journey and inception story of GoDaddy.
GoDaddy founder Bob Parsons is a self-taught coder who picked up a computer textbook at Stanford University and turned his hobby into an enterprise. He started his first business, a financial software services company, in his Lower basement. He ultimately sold Parsons Technology to Intuit for $64 million. Parsons later moved to Arizona and in 1997 started what would become GoDaddy. Initially, he called the company Jomax Technologies, named after a road near my home. The Jomax name just ai???wasnai??i??t memorable.ai??? He changed Jomax Technologies to a more memorable name that was fun to say and literally made people smile ai??i?? GoDaddy.
Parsons focused GoDaddy on domain names after seeing how complicated and expensive the registration process was. He put together a team committed to personalized, telephone customer support, simplified the domain name registration process and reduced the cost. We operate the worldai??i??s largest domain name marketplace, where our customers can find that unique piece of digital real estate, a domain name, perfectly matching their idea. We provide domain name registration and hosting, website creation and hosting and security tools to help customers easily construct and protect their online presence. As our customers grow, we provide productivity tools, like Email marketing, professional email from Microsoft Office 365, and analysis to help improve SEO results.
Today, we have more than 14 million customers around the world, with over 62 million domains under management. Our focused clientele includes small business owners, entrepreneurs and web design professionals.
3. What is your competition in the market? What is it that sets you apart from your competition?
Our biggest competition is the market itself. India has over 51 million small businesses with only a marginal percentage present online. With over 30 percent Internet penetration, India presents a sizeable market. We think that there is enough room for a variety of companies and donai??i??t really see competition.
There are companies in India who offer pieces of what GoDaddy delivers, but what makes GoDaddy unique is it offers a full suite of integrated products that helps small business owners start, run and grow their business online. 4. How has been the beginnerai??i??s journey? What were the challenges you faced in setting up and scaling up your enterprise? Any hurdle that you faced or you are still facing?

5. Can you tell us about other founders/core team members, their backgrounds and rich experiences?
Since 2013, GoDaddyai??i??s core leadership team has been led by CEO and Board Director, Blake Irving. Blake brings passion and visionai??i??along with serious tech credentials to the role. Before coming to GoDaddy, Blake was EVP and Chief Product Officer at Yahoo!, where he expanded monthly users to nearly one billion, launched 180 new Yahoo! websites worldwide and rolled out products in 23 languages and 30 new markets. Ai??Previously, Blake spent 15 years at Microsoft creating consumer products like growing Hotmail to the largest mail service in the world.Ai?? Blake also led the companyai??i??s global Internet development and operations, managing a $1B global R&D budget. Blake began his career at Xerox and Compaq and has been a professor at Pepperdine Universityai??i??s School of Business.
Blakeai??i??s team includes seasoned professionals bringing experience from globally recognized technology companies including Dell, Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle, Yahoo and EBay.
6. How you all are funded? Any early stage money/seed stage experience that you would like to share with us?
GoDaddy went public on April 1, 2015, currently trading on the New York Stock Exchange with the symbol of GDDY.
7. Any other areas or initiatives that you plan to venture in future?

9. Any school/ campus-connect initiatives that you are pursuing or plan to pursue?
GoDaddy actively works globally with technical colleges and universities to select college students for consideration for the GoDaddy Summer Internship Program, providing them the opportunities to learn more about GoDaddy and our tools and solutions for small businesses.
10. Any experience or advice you would like to share with soon to be start-up founders out there?
Startup founders are faced with many day-to-day decisions that can change the course of their business and help them become more successful. Iai??i??d like to call out the importance of choosing the right name for your startup and registering a corresponding domain name. Ai??Creating and maintaining an online presence can be crucial to the success of a startup. Today, many Indian consumers search online for local products and services. If you donai??i??t have a domain name and a website for your business, that means people are searching for ai??i?? and not finding ai??i?? your business online. In simple words, your startupai??i??s domain name is your online identity. Founders should embrace the role their digital identity and presence contributes to their start-up early on, and plan for it to be part of their ongoing growth strategy.
11. What is the business model ofAi??GoDaddy? Can you briefly summarize the growth achieved in both volume and value from the day1 till now?
With more than 14 million customers worldwide and more than 62 million domain names under management, GoDaddy has achieved tremendous growth worldwide especially in India. GoDaddyai??i??s total India customer base stands at more than 600,000 as of 2015. We currently hold over 33% of the total market share for .IN domain names, making GoDaddy the #1 market share holder for .IN in India according to National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI). GoDaddyai??i??s India website traffic grew 23% (Q1 2015 vs Q1 2014). Our India website is ranked #50 on Alexa, highlighting strong customer interest in this market. Demonstrating strong traction of our business and growth around it, our India customer care call volume grew 53% (Q1 2015 vs Q1 2014). We get over 3,000 calls per day at the India customer care center. This is testimony to the fact that there is an increased level of interest among Indian customers for GoDaddy.
