Zarget was founded in 2015 by 3 ex-Zoho employees, who quit their lucrative jobs to pursue something different. They developed a prototype which was ready in a few months, with cutting edge features to boot. Their aim is to adapt website optimization to the modern world, and to simplify it. With a vision to streamline the optimization process and make it more efficient they also will be making things significantly easier for marketers.
IndiaSpark caught up with the team to gain further insight into their venture and its offerings.
1. Tell us about your background before Zarget. Share with us briefly about your entrepreneurial journey and inception of Zarget
The idea to start a company, had been resonating with me for a long time. Being a part of a family of businesspeople, it was natural for me to start something on my own. My cofounders and I decided to give it a shot since we didn’t know if things would go well or not. But once we took our first steps starting a company and building the prototype into a complete product, we felt like real ROCKSTARS! Moving from a settled job to start something on your own is quite a difficult journey. It involves a lot of compromises, taunts, disappointments etc. and is not as easy as it seems from the outside. However, we are fortunate to have pulled through all odds. I even wrote a blog on this to share my experiences.
2. What is Zarget all about? Tell us in detail about the services offered?
We have built an absolutely powerful platform that can be used by any business to see what is happening on their websites and how well the visitors are interacting with it. i.e. users interaction and rate of conversion. It involves few special techniques/activities that should be performed to increase the user engagement on a website, such as funnel analysis, heatmaps and A/B testing.
Funnel analysis: It helps in identifying the high dropoff pages in your conversion funnel.
Heatmaps: Heatmaps are basically visual representations of the visitor clicks on websites. Heatmaps can be used to identify distractions, missing links etc. and further help to improve conversion rate
A/B Testing: A/B testing is the process of testing multiple variations of a webpage against the original and identify the variation with the highest conversion rate.
Using these three tools in tandem, it is possible to optimize the website and increase the conversion rate.
3. What are the growth opportunities in this area?
Conversion rate optimization is not just a buzzword in current world. It is a method of optimizing a website to increase conversions instead of increasing traffic. Ideally, every website that does business online and is interested in increasing the conversion rate is a potential customer. With the number of websites coming online on a daily basis in order to sell, our growth opportunity increases exponentially.
4. What is your competition in the market? What is it that sets you apart from your competition?
There are a couple of companies that offer CRO modules.
Our stand out factor is the ‘industry first chrome plugin’. With this plugin a website can be optimized directly from the browser. This is very useful especially for pages beyond the login screens. Our flagship feature is the ‘dynamic heatmaps’. We provide heatmaps for all types of interactive elements on pages such as sliding banners, dropdown menus etc. Our competitors do not provide this feature. We also have a live reporting feature while our competitors provide a snapshot.
Apart from these, Zarget is the only software that has all the optimization tools A/B testing, Heatmaps and Funnel analysis combined. This way, Zarget has pretty much established as the first ever endtoend conversion rate optimization software in the market.
5. What is the business model of Zarget? Can you briefly summarize the growth achieved in both volume and value from the Day1 till now?
We surely want to become a thrived alternative for SaaS marketing tools. Perhaps, our journey has just begun and so it is too early to count on the volume and the value of our business from day 1 till now.
6. How has been your beginner’s journey? What were the challenges you faced in setting up and scaling up your enterprise? Any hurdle that you faced or still facing?
An entrepreneur’s journey is never easy and is always filled with surprises. Right from the beginning, we were extremely sure of one thing our core team. Our core team’s expertise is what helped us push through the initial phases and come up with what is now Zarget. Our biggest challenge was ‘getting funded’ like any other startup. Being new to the VC game, we were quite clueless on where and how to start. Thanks to our team and the product we built, we managed to get our seed funding from some of the biggest names in the industry Accel Partners and Matrix partners.
7. Can you tell us about your other founders/core team, their background and rich experience?
Santhosh Kumar was earlier the lead manager of security systems at ZOHO who now is the CTO and cofounder of Zarget. He always has different perspective on technology among others in our team. He spends his leisure time underwater and by reading tech blogs. Also he is a best badminton player. Naveen Venkat who was serving as the spearhead of ZOHO’s product development team is Zarget’s CPO and cofounder. He is a chess fanatic and is consistently being rated as the top player online. He is fond of developing applications. As we slowly felt how Zarget can evolve into a best tool in the market for any kind of business to increase their ROI by improving conversions, we surely realized the freedom that being an entrepreneur provides is awesome.
8. How is Zarget funded? Any early stage money/seed stage experience that you would like to share with us?
Nowadays, a good prototype with a well designed story can certainly win the attention of media and tech enthusiasts and can shoot up overnight. It looks like an interesting era going on for capital raising world, indeed, so much transition is happening in this field currently. Many new group of investors have sprung up to invest in promising startups. We entailed funding, to get first working version of our product out to the consumer space for getting initial customer validation. About the funding which we raised recently, it is around $1M. It’s a satisfying number for us as an evolving company. Thanks for ACCEL PARTNERS and MATRIX PARTNERS.
9. Any other areas or initiatives that you plan to venture in future?
We like to take one thing at a time and excel at it before moving on. Our immediate plan to make sure Zarget the No.1 conversion rate optimization suite in the market with all the necessary features. Our aim is to make Zarget a part of every marketer’s arsenal.
10. What will Zarget look like in 10 years from now? All perspectives – people, business, revenue, team, size or anything you foresee for the venture.
10 years is a huge amount of time to come up with predictions. Like I had mentioned, we focus on shortterm goals rather than long term goals. I can maybe share my dream in 10 years time. I dream of Zarget becoming a top notch product company providing world class products that are credible and affordable.
11. Any school/campus connect initiatives that you are pursuing or plan to pursue?
No. Nothing at the moment. Might think about it in future.
12. Any experience or advice you would like to share with soon to be startup founders out there?
The idea to upstart a company might seem very difficult, but it isn’t that bad. Our mantra is ‘Fail fast and move on’. Never be afraid to fail. Keep trying even if you are laid down by the failures that come your way. Go with your gut without any hesitation and never give up. This should help you create a great company and work culture.
We wish Zarget the very best in their future endeavours and hope that they continue to excel in providing their website analysis services.
